Tarvin Village

March 18th - 3 Sacks, Nitrous Gas & Grids

Today I felt obligated to get out and collect because, during my trips to work and Chester, I kept driving past boxes along the main road and discarded canisters of Nitrous Oxide gas.

My intention was to walk my Oscroft Loop and circling back to home along Bye Pass Road and Kelsall Road in order to collect these canisters.

I was shocked to discover just a matter of minutes from a previously un-noticed pile of the cans on Cross Lane just leaving Tarvin.

Owning a coffee shop, I understand the dangers of Nitrous and the quantities. Of late it has become much harder to buy single-use gas portions so abusers have switched tot he catering cans containing hundreds of doses. It is only a matter of time until we find a young person dead beside the road from the abuse of Nitrous.

Risks of Nitrous Abuse

It is very dangerous to inhale nitrous oxide directly from the canister, and doing it in an enclosed space is also very dangerous. Never place a plastic bag over your head. If you take too much nitrous oxide you risk falling unconscious and/or suffocating from the lack of oxygen. People have died this way. Dizziness, which might make you act carelessly or dangerously. Heavy regular use of nitrous oxide can lead to a deficiency of vitamin B12 and to a form of anaemia. Severe B12 deficiency can lead to serious nerve damage, causing tingling and numbness in the fingers and toes. This can be very painful and make walking difficult. It can even lead to paralysis, and the damage may be lasting. Regular use can stop you forming white blood cells properly. It can be hard to judge the amount to use safely. If you have too much you can end up fainting, having an accident or worse.
NO2 in Tarvin

Not only did I encounter this worrying discovery this week but I was also shocked to find that someone has been around the village and stolen any of the cast iron drainage grids they could work loose.

This is dangerous as cars and pedestrians can fall into them.

I reported the ones I came across with the exception of the one at the bottom of Kelsall hill. If you do come across any more, please use the Report It app found on our home page to report it to the council urgently.

Aside all of this negative news, I did manage to collect 3 sacks from my entire 2-hour collection and that is less than of previous weeks.

I know that Nancy has also been out again this week and collected a sack from her ‘patch’ so that’s good. We’re getting there slowly.

Can you Help?

I am proud to live where I do and I am also proud to be collecting this rubbish in my own time but it is more than a one-man job. We need a coordinated team effort which is permanent and sustained. If you could volunteer or help me raise funds for tools, please, click the button…
